I thought about starting a Podcast long time ago. I didn’t because I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to talk about, and I didn’t know if anyone would be interested in listening, and I knew nothing about audio editing, and I didn’t have a fancy mic, and … the list goes on. When Amy invited me to start a Podcast about mid-career crisis, I was like - no one would be interested so yeah… why not?
So on a late Friday afternoon, we hopped on a Google meet. Amy pulled out her fancy mic, while I decided to record using my AirPods (I have a okay-ish mic but I just didn’t bother to dig it out of the closet). We both agreed we sound much smarter and much more humorous in Chinese, so we decided to do it in Chinese. Amy hit recording on QuickTime from her side, and we started our EP1 - Data Girls’ Midlife Crisis.
The audio quality was terrible, but again - no one’s going to listen so who cares. I found a random audio editor in AppStore, cut out the chit-chat at the beginning and end of the audio. Amy made a cute cover picture. Then we posted it on some platforms.
The podcast resonated beyond my expectation, with listeners commenting and sharing their mid-career or midlife crisis. I was deeply embarrassed by the poor audio quality and was finally motivated to dust off the mic from the closet. EP2 has a much better quality and I even picked a festive music clip to match the lunar new year vibe.
Today, in preparation for EP3, I spent a couple hours researching audio editor and watching how-to videos on YouTube. All this happened in less than a week. I don’t know where this Podcast is going to lead us to, but I am already benefiting from this journey. And what you need to start a Podcast? An awesome partner like
